AS: What do you believe was the main driving force behind your team’s success?
AL: We really did work well together. We supported each other’s decisions, had a common goal, were all committed, and were willing to put in the time to make it work. We split up our tasks, and understood our obligations. Part of it was luck that we were placed together in the first place.
AS: We’re currently into the first few rollovers. What can you say to those of us who aren’t as satisfied with our results?
AL: There’s still room to grow at this point, and it’s very possible to do well. If I remember correctly, performance is based on which team has the greatest net change in shareholder value. It’s all about the long-term returns, not the short term ones. The key is to plan ahead. If you know you want to introduce a new bike in the next rollover, you need to have built out the capacity to allow for that to be successful. There is no generic formula since much of where your options lie, it depends on what your competitors are doing. Try to gauge an idea of where they’re headed by analyzing their past reports, and respond accordingly.
AS: What’s an important take-away from Mike’s Bikes that you’ve realized after playing the game?
AL: It gave me crucial experience with teamwork — it’s not so much about the results for me. In high school, you probably found yourself to be the one who had to take the lead and carry the team. Now in SAF, the ones who often carried the team are placed together. When everyone cares, it’s a different ball game. Everyone is motivated, and you have to learn to put your ego aside and see where it takes you. It was really the first time for me to have worked with such dynamics.
AS: Are there any final tips or thoughts you’d like to leave us with, Mike’s Bikes related or not?
AL: Everyone on your team should focus what they’re good at. Doing everything on your own is a difficult task. Cover up your own weaknesses with the strengths of others, so that you can all be contributing your best to the team.
It’s also extremely helpful to write down the minutes of your team meetings that explain the logic behind every decision you’ve made. You need to go back to these notes when writing up your final report. You’ll save yourself so much time later on.
Finally, remember to enjoy the experience!
keep your costs low, make sure you have the right number of employees making bikes (don’t want to be over or short on bikes produced), make sure your bikes are close to what your target market wants, and go to the classes where gerry shows you how to get started. but it REALLY depends on what everyone else does in your world…oh and when you first design a bike, if you put more money into it at first, it becomes cheaper to make in production, so more profit.
